Matka silk has a creamy color of unbleached wild silk. Looks a bit like linen but much much softer. Wild silk like this has a lot of sericin on the fiber, making it take color like nothing else and making it look very saturated in hue. Very pleasant hand, supple and soft.
Matka silk is spun from the leftover fibers of hatched cocoons of the Bombyx Mori silkworm. Originally plied together and wound on a mud pot called Matka, which is how this silk got its name.
This silk is woven exclusively for DekelDyes by a weaver cooperative in India, pre-washed, and usually free of sizing, there should be no need to scour this before use. We give it a light wash and make sure we wet out the fabric in cold water before we start mordanting or dyeing.
The weavers of this fabric are over 50% women, and fair trade is guaranteed.
