Refined Lac Extract – Rich Reds

Lac is one of the world's oldest known dyes, with records dating back to 250 AD. This deep red colorant is derived from the shellac resin excreted by the lac insect. Unlike regular lac powder, which requires a tedious vinegar extraction, our highly concentrated lac extract is pre-processed for easy use and greater dyeing efficiency.

Color & Dye Properties

Our regular lac extract (https://www.suzannedekel.com/product-page/lac-extract-kerria-lacca)produces a spectrum of warm, muted tones—crimson, burgundy, and deep purples. This lac extract leans much more toward reds.

While similar to cochineal, lac offers softer, richer hues with excellent light and wash fastness on silk and wool.

How to Use

Dosage: Use 3% WOF (weight of fiber) for medium shades.

Preparation: Dissolve in a small amount of hot water to form a paste before adding it to the dye bath.

Mordanting: Though lac is a substantive dye and does not require a mordant, we recommend using one for even, longer-lasting results:

Alum (15%) for protein fibers

Aluminum acetate (10%) for cellulose fibers

pH Sensitivity: Lac is highly pH-sensitive. Adding an acidic assist (such as vinegar or cream of tartar) enhances red tones.
