Why My Workshop Terms & Conditions Benefit Everyone

Workshops should be spaces of creativity, learning, and respect—places where we can focus fully on the art of natural dyeing and printing without distractions. That’s why I now have clear terms and conditions in place, as well as a health waiver, to protect both my participants and myself. These are not just formalities; they ensure that every workshop runs smoothly and that we all enjoy the experience to the fullest.

I did not always use to have downpayments or any signed forms, but some recent events have made me realize I really was not doing myself or my participants a favor. It is also important for my students to recognize this is my full time job, and not some backyard hobby project I do for fun (I actually deeply deeply love what I do!)

Holding a Space With Intention

Preparing for a workshop takes time, care, and materials. I spend hours ensuring that everything is ready—from assisting people with their travel plans, booking hotel rooms, building the curiculum, sourcing the best natural dyes, preparing fabrics, and creating a space where learning can happen without stress.

When someone signs up, they are not just taking a seat; they are becoming part of this carefully planned experience. That’s why I require a non-refundable down payment. This makes sure that participants are truly committed and not simply holding a space they may later abandon. This policy is fair to everyone, allowing those who genuinely want to attend the opportunity to do so, and to me, respecting the time and effort I invest in you!

Safety First: The Health Waiver

Natural dyeing is a hands-on process, we work with hot water and steam, and some chemicals are involved. Like any activity, there are risks. While I take every precaution to provide a safe environment, accidents can happen. Whether it’s slipping on stairs or a minor reaction to plant material, my health waiver makes it clear that participants take responsibility for their own well-being.

To minimize risks, I implement several safety measures during the workshop:

  • Clear pathways: I ensure that workspaces are organized, and walkways are kept free from obstructions to prevent trips and falls.

  • Protective gear: We work with gloves and closed shoes, wear aprons, and, when necessary, masks to reduce direct contact with certain dye materials.

  • Ventilation: Workshops are conducted in well-ventilated areas to avoid prolonged exposure to dye fumes.

  • Guided instruction: Every step of the dyeing process is demonstrated with clear safety instructions to ensure proper handling of materials and tools.

By following these guidelines, I strive to create an environment where participants can feel confident and focus on the joy of dyeing.

A Politics-Free, Respectful Space

Learning flourishes in a space of mutual respect. My terms and conditions include a simple but important rule: no discussions about other instructors and no politics. This isn’t about avoiding important topics—it’s about making sure that our time together is focused, welcoming, and free from divisive conversations.

Respect is the foundation of a truly creative environment. Just as I expect that no one speaks about me behind my back, I extend that same grace to my esteemed colleagues. Every instructor brings their own approach, experience, and philosophy to their craft. Comparisons, critiques, or unnecessary gossip about other instructors have no place in this workshop. Instead, we focus on our shared learning, the materials in front of us, and the collective experience of working with our hands.

Similarly, politics can be deeply personal and, at times, divisive. In a time where so many people are stressed and hurt by politics, I invite you to leave political discussions and your worries outside the workshop. We create a space where everyone—regardless of background or beliefs—feels welcome and at ease. This way, we can immerse ourselves fully in the beauty of natural dyes and the wisdom of the craft.

Lastly;

Respecting Privacy: No Unapproved Photos

Not in the agreement but spoken about in clarity in every workshop I teach: The workshop environment is a place of personal growth and learning, and I believe in respecting everyone’s privacy. That means if you take photos during the workshop, please ensure you have permission before posting any images of other participants. Everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to being photographed, and it’s important that we respect those boundaries. I check with everyone if they are ok with pictures being shared, and I you do not want to, that's ok!

By agreeing to these terms, all participants contribute to a workshop environment that is safe, engaging, and truly about the what we LOVE. These policies are designed with care—just like everything else I do.

I have added my policies here for you to see before you sign up, and I invite anyone who is providing these services to copy and adapt them to their own personal use.

Thank you for understanding, and I look forward to dyeing with you!

With lots of love,
