Fabrics are a joy forever Can you have too many fabrics? Probably not. I love the feel and look of undyed fabrics, different shades of whites and oatmeal neatly stacked in boxes, Marie Kondo style so I can easily leaf trough them and see what I need. Protein fabrics like wool and silks may be a good choice for your first print as they pick up pigments easily. The wool can come from sheep, from alpacas, goats and rabbits. For silk there are three main staple silk worms that produces cocoons that are spun or reeled into threads. The most common types of (industrial) silk are made with Bombyx Mori. Cellulose fabrics like cotton and linen, viscose and ramie. These fabrics are made from the seed hairs of cotton plants or from the bast fibers of bamboo, hemp, nettle etc. Printing on these fabrics can be bit more tricky, as they have no special affinity with mordants or pigments, but with the right mordants and technique you will be able to get gorgeous prints, I promise! What fabrics should you use? Fabrics can be white or off white, and should be without too much structure. The flatter the surface, the clearer your prints will be. "Hairy" wools and fluffy cottons will not give you clear botanical prints. Fabrics that are too thin, will look very light in print, too thick will be hard to work with. Knits and stretch are easily stretched out while you are working with them , resulting in warped prints, keep these for later when we are after a little practice. My recommendation For your first bundles I recommend one or two fabrics like: Habotai silk 8 mommi Silk satin 12 mommi Wool etamine de laine (light weight) Soft flat woven cotton Pro-tip: To get started, I advice working with narrow strips of fabric, between 25-30 cm wide. It will make it easy for you to get the technique down and you will keep the samples for future reference. I do mordant in one piece, so I can work with small doses of mordant, and then tear pieces as I need.
