What does it mean 'to discharge'? A chromophore is the part of a molecule responsible for its color. Discharging is the process of removing natural dye by destroying or altering the dye chromophores. This can happen by differences in Ph and other reactions with tannins, acids and pigments in the leaves This play of leaves and dyes will make for stunning results. The short version: . Target fabric is mordanted and dyed with logwood. The dye should be concentrated. . Leaves are laid out on the target piece, facing down. . A blanket moist blanket is placed on this sandwich. . Add a barrier. . Roll and tie tight. . Steam for 90 minutes. The downside of a leaf is the part facing the ground. This is where the stomate are, which release the most pigments and acids that can then alter the dye chromophores in the target piece. You will see that using this technique, a lot of leaves come into play that you would not usually use for botanical printing. There are lovely weeds out there that can be a lovely candidate, so do not forget to enter a 'secret' leaf in your projects to test these. Step one: mordant your fabric Mordants recipes for cellulose and protein! Choose a mordant and work with a medium large piece of fabric for a first try, weigh and note the weight of your dry target fabric first and write it down. For a purple fabric Use a large non-reactive vessel Dissolve 15% WOF aluminium triformate with two cups tepid water. Stir well. Top up with water that is around 40ºC enough to just cover the fabrics. (Aluminium triformate should not be heated more than that) Add pre wetted textiles.. Stir and work the fabric well for even coverage. Let this sit for 90 minutes approximately For a blue fabric Use a large non-reactive vessel Dissolve 5% WOF copper sulfate with two cups hot water just off the boil. Stir well. Top up with tepid water that is around enough to just cover the fabrics. Add pre wetted textiles.. Stir and work the fabric well for even coverage. Let this sit for 90 minutes at least, possibly overnight. Stir regularly. Mixed mordant (dark purple) Use a large non-reactive vessel Dissolve 1o% WOF aluminium triformate with two cups tepid water. Stir well. Add 2% WOF ferrous sulfate OR 3% copper sulfate Stir well Top up with water that is around 40ºC enough to just cover the fabrics. (Aluminium triformate should not be heated more than that) Add pre wetted textiles.. Stir and work the fabric well for even coverage. Let this sit for even cover
