Our highest-quality sappan wood extract is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for use on organic textiles. 
 
The extract is made from the heartwood of Caesalpina sappan, aka eastern Brazil wood. These trees are grown for us in a renewable and sustainable forest in India.
The pigment extracted is Brazilin, which gives a whole range of reds, pinks, and oranges depending on the Ph level of your dye bath.
 
We use this at 5-10% WOF.  100 grams of sappanwood extract easily dyes 1.5 kilos of fabric.
Dissolve in hot water and heat well to dye, just below a simmer.
 
Use an alum mordant previously to dye reds. Copper mordant will give you dark red, plum and wine shades.
